The Metrics Worth Tracking

Click-Through Rate (CTR)

What it is: Percentage of recipients who clicked a link in your email.

Why it matters more than opens: Clicks require intent. Opening an email takes half a second. Clicking means you were interested enough to act.

Industry benchmark: 2-5% for B2C, 1-3% for B2B.

How to improve it: Stronger CTA, clearer value proposition, fewer competing links, better link placement.

Click-to-Open Rate (CTOR)

What it is: Clicks divided by opens. The percentage of people who clicked after opening.

Why it matters: Filters out deliverability noise. A high CTOR means your content is resonating with the people who do see it. A low CTOR means your content is disappointing after the subject line.

Target: 20-30%+ is good.

Conversion Rate

Spam Rate

What it is: Percentage of recipients who marked your email as spam.

Why it matters (critically): Gmail's threshold is 0.1%. Above 0.3% and your deliverability takes a serious hit. This is the metric that can kill your entire program.

How to keep it low: Only email people who explicitly opted in. Make unsubscribing easy (counterintuitive, but true — frustrated people who can't unsubscribe hit "spam" instead). Send relevant content.

The Metrics That Are Misleading

Open Rate (Mostly)

Apple Mail Privacy Protection broke open rate tracking for a significant chunk of your list. When a user has MPP enabled, Apple automatically loads tracking pixels — meaning "opens" are counted even when the email was never actually read.

Open rate is still useful as a relative metric (is it going up or down for your list?) but meaningless as an absolute benchmark.

Unsubscribe Rate

High unsubscribe rates can actually be healthy. It means you're being clear about what you offer and people who aren't interested are self-selecting out. A list of people who never unsubscribe but also never buy is worse than a smaller, engaged list.
